UN intervention

Letter March 05, 2020
A naked show of aggression against already an oppressed minority shows how bad the situation is

ISLAMABAD: UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet has challenged controversial CAA that was passed in India to discriminate against Muslims living in that country, against which protests and riots are being carried out. It is because of all this chaos that more than 40 lives have been lost and hundreds injured. It has become a thorn in the Indian democratic paw. Indian secularism has shielded itself away from Hindutva that turned, even the sane people, insane. Vandalism and the brutal killing of Muslims in the Indian capital remained the order of the day during the past couple of weeks. Iran and Pakistan have raised their voice against violence but to no avail.

Now the UN has taken notice of these atrocities and moved the apex court of India to stop harassment of minorities in the country. Unfortunately, peaceful protests that continued have been raided by RSS extremists. A naked show of aggression against already an oppressed minority shows how bad the situation is. Sadly, the security forces allegedly allowed extremists to ransack properties and kill innocent Muslims. Human rights of every citizen of India must be respected without any discrimination on the basis of religion. It is a welcome step by the UN and hopefully it will bear fruit equal rights for the Muslims and other minorities in India.
