Benazir Bhutto herself sidelined the old party faithful like Ghulam Mustafa Khar, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi...
CHANTILLY, VA, US: Mahreen Khan’s article, “The party is over — literally” (July 23) is very well written. However, it was Benazir Bhutto herself who sidelined the old party faithful like Ghulam Mustafa Khar, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi, Abdul Hafeez Pirzada, JA Rahim, Mumtaz Bhutto and so on. Furthermore, her two terms in office did not inspire much confidence in the general public in terms of governance. However, it is also true that her ability to deliver on election pledges and so on, was constantly undercut by the military and a hostile president — not forgetting our own Brutus, Farooq Leghari. As for the present lot, can we expect those in power to raise taxes on the rich and eliminate exemptions and concessions on the powerful and well-connected?
Regarding Hina Rabbani Khar, I share the writer’s views. She has many fans here in the US, mostly, but not entirely women, but she is a classic non-descript ‘lightweight’ as demonstrated amply in her previous position which was grandly called ‘minister of state for economy and statistics’ where she did not do anything for either.
