A hellhole of a city

Letter July 23, 2011
No wonder Karachi ranks bottom on most lists which place major world cities on indices that rank quality of life.

KARACHI: July 23 and July 24 saw yet another bout of violence hitting Karachi and, at the time of writing this, close to 20 people had been killed. This time, we are being told that two rival political factions were engaged in what seems to have been a very violent turf battle.

Add to this the woes the people of the city have to experience on a daily basis in the form of loadshedding, water shortages and terrible traffic, and you have the makings of a hellhole of a city. No wonder Karachi ranks bottom on most lists which place major world cities on indices that rank quality of life and so on.

The question is, who is going to wrest it from the chaos, the anarchy and the violence that Karachi is currently engulfed in? It has to be its political stakeholders as well as civil society. They have to unite to work together so that all of them, can make Karachi more livable because right now, for the majority of its residents, life must be close to a miserable existence.
