Death penalty

Letter February 12, 2020
A lot of people may disagree with me, but I insist that death penalty is not enough of a deterrent

KARACHI: Recently the National assembly passed a resolution calling for public hanging of rapists and child abusers. While something needs to be done, this is no solution at all.

We have seen how the authorities and the law have been working in the country. There are cases where suspects are acquitted for want of evidence and there are cases where innocent people remain imprisoned for long periods. Bribery is very common among policemen and that helps culprits flee. What if an innocent person is hanged to death? Will you all raise your voices tomorrow?

A lot of people may disagree with me, but I insist that death penalty is not enough of a deterrent. Our authorities need to devise a system whereby such heinous crimes are stopped from happening in the first place. It might save someone’s life before it’s ruined.
