People should be encouraged to take their kids to psychiatric clinics if they face any kind of mental issues
KARACHI: What makes a student choose to commit suicide? In today’s competitive world, stress has become a part of the student’s academic life, due to expectations and the fear of failure. Excessive academic stress leads to depression, anxiety, nervousness and low self-esteem.
Suicide rate in students due to academic pressure has increased in Pakistan. People here do not take mental health seriously and there is no psychological counselling and guidance in any educational institutions. Many students commit suicide when they do not get the result as per the expectations of their parents. Our education system does not educate students on how to manage stress.
A lot has to be done to cope with this serious issue. Educational institutions must have counselling facilities, counsellors provide guidance on how to manage stress, and deal with anxiety, panic attacks and low self-esteem. People should be encouraged to take their kids to psychiatric clinics if they face any kind of mental issues. Seeking a psychiatric help is not a taboo and mental illness does not mean that the person is crazy. Most importantly a standard suicide prevention system should be designed so that people come forward regarding the issues they face.
