Qasem Soleimani assassination

Letter January 06, 2020
All states should react reasonably, keeping in view the larger interests of humanity and avoid any escalation

CHINIOT: Qasem Soleimani, Iran’s revolutionary guard commander, was assassinated in an air strike is an attempt by the USA to undermine the results achieved after the defeat of ISIS. This incident has grievous implications for the region. A war-trodden area, which has recently been gripped off from the shackles of ISIS by efforts of many forces, is again plunging into another crisis. The Middle East, especially Iraq, has always been a playground of proxy wars for superpowers to show their might. When the US realised that its grip over Iraq is being challenged, as is evident from the attack over a US consulate a few days ago, it carried out this planned incident to unleash another plot. Iran has described this incident as an attack on its sovereignty and has vowed to carry out severe actions against the US. Furthermore, this incident has also been condemned by many states including Pakistan, describing it as a violation of international law and state sovereignty. In the midst of this chaos, all states should react reasonably, keeping in view the larger interests of humanity and avoid any escalation.
