Climate change

Letter January 05, 2020
Recently in Karachi we have witnessed a cold wave that almost broke the record of the past 11 years.

KARACHI: Recently in Karachi we have witnessed a cold wave that almost broke the record of the past 11 years. We went through a severe winter spells this month and a recurring Siberian cold air on our faces.

This is not usual in Karachi and we were not prepared for this. Still we managed and have survived this harsh weather until now. The most striking point to notice is how fast and increasingly vicious the effects of climate change have become. The devastation caused is enormous which can be seen throughout the world and it is becoming more and more frequent.

The whole weather patterns have thoroughly changed and winters are prolonged while summers are also ruthless. If we look back to the summer season, it was also very hot and humid in Karachi.

This happened all over the country. We can see that enovironmental activists and other organisations have sprung up to combat the denial behind climate change and the same need to be done in our country. We need to speak up for nature and the climate and urge people, at least in our country, to stop polluting and start acting fast before it leads to wide-scale destruction.

These sudden and abrupt changes are dangerous and hazardous to us. Lahore suffered a lot due to smog issues and bad air quality. In the past, this didn’t usually happen and now due to pollution and certain other changes these types of incidents are escalating.

We need awareness and environmentalists to do something about this issue. Being a writer and social activist it’s my utmost responsibility to point out this environmental issue.
