Pakistan versus India

Letter July 19, 2011
Have yet to come across an article on Pakistan which depicts its paradox so efficiently like the one by Aatish Taseer.

NEW DELHI: This is with reference to Ejaz Haider’s article of July 19 titled “Aatish’s personal fire”. I have yet to come across a short article on Pakistan which depicts the paradox of Pakistan so efficiently like the one by Aatish Taseer in The Wall Street Journal.

The fact is that Aatish is a talented young man who had an identity crisis in his life after being dumped by his Pakistani father. One of the things that he had written was to talk about the role of the Pakistani establishment in using its anti-India stance to damage democracy in Pakistan and to point out that the end result of this is to maintain its superior position vis-à-vis civilian institutions in Pakistan. Now what’s so untrue or even new about this argument?

For the writer to give figures about the order of battle of the Indian army and how many of its corps are Pakistan-specific doesn’t take away from the fact that Pakistan has its fair share of problems and that these cannot be brushed under the proverbial carpet.
