On selfishness

Letter December 28, 2019
The idea of being selfless means that one acts not on the basis of oneself but on some external factor

KARACHI: Human beings are inherently selfish. This is something natural, and very core of our nature. While we may think of being selfish as an ignorant act, in nature it helps us stay alive. Since the very start nature adheres to the concept of survival of the fittest, therefore it is in our nature to fight for survival, and thus become selfish. After all, staying alive may be the only true purpose we have. In contrast, the idea of being selfless means that one acts not on the basis of oneself but on some external factor that is not linked to his or her own selfishness. The fact is that no one can truly be selfless because in the end whatever we do is to either suppress or satisfy our own impulses, whether it may be happiness, guilt, excitement or sorrow. It then becomes absolutely necessary to balance out how selfish one is with regard to different situations in life. We need to try and think about others before we act.
