Releasing a convict

Letter November 22, 2019
What a loud and clear message to all the corrupt in Pakistan!

ISLAMABAD: Everyone knows that the heads of both major political parties, the PPP and the PML-N, have made tons of personal money and have squeezed the country’s economy dry.

Yet even a strong person like Imran Khan could not keep them behind bars as Nawaz has now gone abroad for ‘medical treatment’. What a loud and clear message to all the corrupt in Pakistan.

Pakistan does not have the moral authority to keep even white-collar criminal behind bars and this is providing an opportunity for a way out to a convict. That is not what used to happen in Riasat-i-Madina where the powerful and the weak were equally held accountable. The mistake that Musharraf made is being repeated yet again. Pakistanis don’t seem to learn from history.

It is disheartening to see that Pakistan could not withstand a couple of years of significant pain in order to get out of impending bankruptcy, to make the essential structural changes and to root out corruption — which is needed to put the nation on the path to prosperity.
