Rant of a Pakistani citizen

Letter November 14, 2019
The world is moving ahead at a very fast pace, and we are lagging behind

KARACHI: Every citizen in Pakistan feels a certain sense of pain when they see their country not progressing like many others in the world, even those in their own neighbourhood.

We need to understand how the countries in other parts of the world work. It is very easy to determine the success of other nations by understanding the mindset of the people. Let’s consider it hypothetically. If we take our people to Germany or any other First World country and take the German people to Pakistan, what do you think will happen? I believe that after 10 to 12 years, the same Germany will look like Pakistan and our country will become Germany. It may be harsh to swallow, but it is a reality that we should accept and understand. What I mean to say is that it is the people that make a country great.

The three key words that the Quaid-e-Azam famously used and that served him as his guiding principles were Unity, Faith and Discipline. If we try to find these characteristics in our nation, we will fail, unfortunately. These three words are not ordinary; any nation which inherits these qualities can never fail.

The most common problem of our people is that of ownership. The people are not ready to take ownership of the country and the easiest way for them is to blame the government for all their problems. If we look back at history, we will notice that change always come from the bottom and if there is a revolution brewing, then it is the middle class that takes the lead. If we really want to change the fate of our country, every individual in the country will have to the responsibility in his own small domain. Beware, the world is moving ahead at a very fast pace, and we are lagging behind. We cannot wait for any great leader to come and become our saviour. We all will have to rise.
