KECH: World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world. The first World Mental Health Day was observed on 10 October 1992. Undoubtedly, mental health is integral to live a healthy and balanced life. Our mental health encompasses our psychological, emotional and social well-being. This means it impacts how we feel, think and behave each day. It is important at every stage of our life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood and it needs to be taken more seriously. Mental health issues affect almost 80 per cent of people in one way or another. According to the WHO, approximately 20 per cent of the world’s youth have mental disorders or problems and about half of them develop disorders before the age of 14. At least 800,000 people commit suicide each year and it is the second leading cause of deaths in 15-29 years-old (WHO). There is a dire need to emphasise the importance of mental health, as there is a stigma associated with mental illness. Overall, mental illness is common and can be treated. Don’t let this stigma stop you from seeking help and continue with your treatment.
