Disaster management

Letter October 06, 2019
Helplessness of the survivors highlights the inadequacies and the inability of Pakistan's disaster management

RAWALPINDI: Recently, an earthquake of a serious magnitude shook different parts of the country. It revealed its catastrophic effects by physically showing the incompetence of the government through shabby and weak infrastructure. It proved once again that Pakistan seriously needs to develop the ability to deal with these kinds of disasters.

There were no adequate measures available to deal with a disaster of this kind; what will we do in case of a serious nationwide emergency? The disaster management does not seem to be active as they were lacking to deal with this sudden situation. The same happened when floods ruined many different areas of the country. This shows the inadequacy of most of our emergency departments.

Nowadays most people from Mirpur are living under the open sky. They do not have basic emergency services available which highlighted the inadequacies and the inability of the country’s disaster management.

I hope that in coming years we will be able to develop basic disaster management infrastructure and be able to save countless lives.
