The government and the private sector need to develop ways to enhance rural infrastructures
ISLAMABAD: We are an agriculture-based economy. The farming sector of the country employs about 70 per cent of the labour force. It is important to note here that our livestock production continues to record increased growth because of private sector investments, especially in poultry and fish farming. These segments have high market demand and enjoy faster turnaround time, and as such, appear to be growing at a faster pace than crop production. I have seen that most livestock farmers lack knowledge of modern practices, have insufficient capital and own little or no equipment of their own.
This can be a best prospect industry sector for the country, if our government organisations start paying due attention to farms, processing companies and food vendors, coupled with preservative technologies. The agriculture and livestock sector can create new opportunities for farmers and provide more affordable and healthier diets for future generations.
In order to increase our agriculture and livestock productivity, the government and the private sector need to develop ways to enhance rural infrastructures such as roads and irrigation facilities to improve the efficiency of production.
The country’s agricultural and livestock potential is yet to be tapped effectively. At present, climate change poses a threat to both our agriculture and livestock sectors, but who cares?
