KARACHI: Clearly, the ban imposed by the Sindh government on pillion riding in Karachi had no effect because a day after its imposition, the city saw the deaths of approximately 35 people. This involved attacks by unidentified armed men on three separate buses in which 13 people were killed. Also, in all these instances, it turned out that the attackers were on motorcycles. In fact, in most cases of target killing, the police say that the attackers are on motorcycles. This would suggest that merely banning pillion riding is not the solution to the problem.
What is needed is for the state to assert its writ and provide ordinary citizens the security and safety of life that is their right.
