K-Electric’s response

Letter August 29, 2019
KE has requested civic bodies to take preventive measures before rains to ensure there is no water-logging in Karachi

K-Electric’s response

Apropos the letter published in your paper titled ‘Crumbling Infrastructure’, K-Electric would like to appraise the readers that the utility is deeply saddened by the unfortunate incidents which occurred during the recent torrential rains and sympathises with the affected families. KE extends full cooperation in the investigation process. The power utility reiterates that it remains committed to Karachi and will undertake required remedial measures in light of the investigation results.

At the same time, KE will also be conducting a network-wide study to identify opportunities for infrastructure improvement so as to strengthen both reliability and safety of power supply. It is pertinent to note that the majority of the incidents occurred inside homes through broken wires and internal equipment or due to non-KE infrastructures such as kundas and hanging lights.

In this regard, KE had also requested civic bodies to take preventive measures before recent rains to ensure there is no water-logging in Karachi so as to avoid any untoward incident. However, during the recent rains, various areas of the city have been submerged creating an urban flooding situation.

KE for long has been engaging with all concerned stakeholders so that they recognise their due role to provide an enabling environment for the power utility to operate by enforcing basic urban development protocols in a planned manner across the city and to eliminate the menace of encroachments, kundas, unwarranted use of KE’s infrastructure and water-logging around power infrastructure during and after rain.
