Thinking about death

Letter August 24, 2019
Life is bigger than material wealth, it is the intangible that remains

HYDERABAD: The day before yesterday, I had the opportunity to watch a debate on an international news channel of which the central idea was “Fears about dying are unhealthy”. There is even a field of study called thanatology which examines the human reaction to death and dying. Death is a reality that we all have to succumb to. If we look around most of us are busy to improve our today for a better tomorrow. Our wants and needs are constantly changing every passing day, controlled by our greed.

We never know which moment will be our last. Surely a day will come when we will be long forgotten. Our material gain and wealth will be useless.

In my opinion, fearing death is healthy for a human being, when we fear we prepare and take precautions to avoid such circumstances. Thinking about death puts one’s life in perspective. It helps us re-evaluate our wants, needs and desires. It helps us realise what is most important to us and makes us prioritise our lives and relationships. We have lost touch with the most inevitable nature of our reality that we are a part of nature and that one day we will perish. This thought helps us stay grounded and humble. We have responsibilities and we need to fulfil those as well but never let your greed to dictate your will. Life is bigger than material wealth. It is the intangible that remains.
