Freedom Movement

Letter August 09, 2019
Our leaders need to realise that without unity there can be no peace, progress and prosperity

ISLAMABAD: I could not take an active part in the freedom movement against the colonial power, but I made little contribution by attending public meetings addressed by Muslim League leaders. I witnessed skirmishes between workers of the Congress and the Muslim League and used to visit the house of Sheikh Muhamed Umer, a prominent leader of the Muslim League. The leaders asked party workers to spread the message of Pakistan. There was unity of action and thought among all. As the result of a long struggle Pakistan became a reality on 14th August. Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah announced independence. We celebrated victory by distributing sweets, congratulating and hugging one another.

The founder of Pakistan left for his eternal abode soon and Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan was assassinated at a public meeting in Rawalpindi. That was the point when the nation became rudderless. Senior leaders started bickering and fought for political power, destabilised and conspired to overthrow one another’s governments. Other nations which got freedom after us have achieved political stability and sustainable economy while our leaders drag the country to dependence. Our leaders need to realise that without unity there can be no peace, progress and prosperity.
