Peace in Afghanistan won’t be possible until Kabul is brought to the table
TURBAT: What is extremely surprising is that on the one side the Afghan peace talks continue and on the other attacks in Afghanistan remain consistent. In the first half of 2019, a large number of Afghans were killed by Nato and government forces.
As per the UN, over 1,200 civilians were killed in acts of violence in the first six months of this year. More than 700 of these casualties were the result of air strikes and night raids carried out by Afghan forces and their foreign backers. There seems to be a paradox of peace and conflict at play.
Seven rounds of talks have taken place regarding the issue but no productive agreement has come out of it. The Afghan government is still keen to move things forwards and, quite surprisingly, seems rather optimistic.
Historically, it is believed that peace is not possible through war. War is not the sign of peace but rather of destruction. Unfortunately, the nations have failed to accept this fact. The Americans only want a graceful leave out of Afghanistan. They seem to care less about the people there but rather their own image. In my opinion, peace in Afghanistan won’t be possible until Kabul is brought to the table.
