O and A level results

Letter August 03, 2019
Idea of our kids aspiring to have their own start-up baffles us

SARGODHA: With the 13th of August just around the corner, Cambridge students are getting anxious about their results. O and A levels results will be announced worldwide on August 13.

But, before the eventful day arrives, I would like to ask all parents one question: why are we so obsessed with ensuring our kids make it to the top medical or engineering colleges? Why can’t we think beyond these two programmes and accept others carrying the same prestige? Pakistan has, over the last many years, produced enough doctors and engineers. Now it is time we had scientists, astronauts, IT experts and artists.

The major reason why a neigbouring country is developing rapidly is because it produces IT experts who become CEOs of globally-renowned companies. While we, on the other hand, grapple with the fear of being rejected social validation if our child doesn’t get a certain number of A’s. Even today, the idea of our kids aspiring to have their own start-up baffles us. This is merely because we restrict ourselves from viewing the bigger picture.

I request all parents: if your kid doesn’t achieve A*s, muster up the courage to talk to them and encourage them, rather than using their achievements as a source of social recognition. Try to see the hidden talent that has been suppressed within him or her.
