It is time to speak up and bring the conversation against domestic violence to light
TURBAT: No one can deny the fact that women are repressed and marginalised in our conservative society. In March of this year, it was reported that a man in Karachi’s Memon Goth beat his wife and daughter to death over some petty argument.
Similarly, some days ago a man killed his own sister for so-called honor. This past Ramazan, a man allegedly shot and killed his younger daughter for failing to wake him up in time for Sehri. All of these incidents are already forgotten. Have we, as a society, turned a blind eye towards these horrendous crimes?
It takes a great deal of courage and strength to come forth with such stories in our society. Matters like these are quickly hushed up and brushed under the carpet. Pakistani women have had to endure tremendous pain after suffering from unforgivable violence. Others merely question their truthfulness. For the world, I pose a question. Have we lost our love, respect, dignity and value for others? Are we so quick to forgo humanity for personal gains?
Women are being murdered, raped and killed behind closed doors. Attempts to voice out these crimes are crushed under the boot of society. It is time to speak up and bring the conversation against domestic violence to light.
