I would like to emphasise the need for quality training of midwives to meet the criteria set by ICM
KARACHI: This is in reference to the article “The pivotal role of midwives” by Rabbi Royan, the UNFPA country representative in Pakistan published on June 27. Mr Royan made a plea for a national commitment to strengthen the health system through increasing the number and quality of midwives in order to achieve the Millenium Development Goal (MDG) 5.
Corresponding to his statement, I would like to further emphasise the need for quality training of midwives, in terms on knowledge and skill, to meet the criteria set by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM). This will help Pakistan achieve the goals set in MDG 4 and 5 goals.
