Getting away from literature

Letter July 26, 2019
Now we do not see the young generation interested in literature

KARACHI: It is depressing to see how fast our young generation is distancing itself from culture and literature.

Formerly young people, even students of matriculation and FA/FSc, were familiar with names of Urdu writers like Manto, Krishn Chandar, Ismet Chughtai and English writers like Dickens, Hardy, Enid Blyton, etc.

Now we do not see the young generation interested in literature. What is ironic is that the Indian writer Arundhati Roy recites Faiz’s and other Urdu poets’ couplets. Roy is not even Hindi speaking from North India. She is Malyalam speaking from Kerala. She profusely quotes Urdu poetry in her writings and lectures.
