Freedom of expression

The foundational characteristics of a democratic nation

KARACHI: On Tuesday, journalists in Pakistan staged a nation-wide protest against censorship, increasing lay-offs and delayed salary payments. One is apt to raise the question of freedom of speech as it is one of the foundational characteristics of a democratic nation. However, the idea of freedom extends beyond all such created structures as it lies at the very heart of human nature. What does it mean to be free? Thinkers have pondered over the question for centuries and it is time that we rekindled the fire that has been dimmed for quite a while.
