Deteriorating education

Letter July 17, 2019
The deteriorating standard of education needs to checked

ISLAMABAD: Most people in rural Sindh are deprived of even basic education. Most young boys and girls are out of school. This problem tends to give birth to a number of social ills such as unemployment, gender inequality, poverty, poor health and malnutrition. A good quality education is the first and foremost need of everyone. It is the key to change the destiny of a nation.

In the rural areas of Sindh, educational institutions are rotting. According to a report, 50% of the children are out of school, and those who do attend school are not in a position to get admission to universities. The condition of the education sector poses a serious threat to the country’s progress and prosperity, as it can impact economic growth and constrain domestic life.

Shah Ladhani is a beautiful model village near Khairpur. There, a primary school named Haji Ali Maitlo, once known for the betterment of future generations, is presently a place full of garbage, cattle and compost piles. On the other hand, children are forced to spend their life without education. Tragically, even the functional schools are devoid of basic facilities such as proper washrooms and clean drinking water and instead have broken chairs and poor infrastructure.

Furthermore, many schools in Dasht, a well-known district situated to the west of Turbat, are nonfunctional. The state of educational institutions there is deeply unsettling, as children play outside. Teachers are not concerned about fulfilling their responsibility and would just hand students their homework assignments to do after school.

Implementation of the 11-point agenda of Prime Minister Imran Khan seems improbable. His manifesto included a corruption free nation, betterment in education, alleviation of poverty, etc. but yet everything remains the same. The government should act swiftly to ensure quality education in Sindh and Balochistan. The deteriorating standard of education needs to checked. Students should be made aware of the importance of education and be motivated to give their best in examinations.
