KARACHI: There are enormous potholes and large craters on roads of Karachi and they need immediate attention of the authorities. There is also the problem of open manholes across the city posing a severe threat to children and people of all age groups. Many children fall into them due to their small size, and are unable to come out, as they are very deep. Just a few days ago, a five-year-old fell in a manhole, whose cover was missing, in the middle of the road. Unfortunately, the child drowned. This is not an isolated incident and such incidents keep occurring every few days. The problem gets even worse during the rainy season, as the roads fill up with murky water, and one is unable to see the open manholes. Karachi is expected to receive rainfall soon, as the monsoon season is upon us. The municipalities need to cover and seal all the manholes across the city to prevent further drowning accidents. As citizens, we must also keep a look out for children playing in the streets and make sure they remain safe.
