Traffic police campaign

Letter July 03, 2019
This is much needed-initiative, considering the number of road accidents in the city

ISLAMABAD: The Karachi Traffic Police launched a road safety campaign on Monday that is supposed to target motorcyclists found not wearing a helmet. After carrying out a number of campaigns and running public service advertisements, the traffic police are now resorting to stricter methods. Motorcyclists who do not wear a helmet will be fined and the motorcycle will be seized. The bike will only be returned after proving that the driver has procured a helmet. In order to assist motorcyclists, a number of traders will be setting up stalls to sell helmets at subsidised prices. The preparations for the crackdown started a few months ago as motorcyclists were constantly warned about the consequences of driving without a helmet, through banners, commercials, etc.

This is a much needed-initiative, considering the number of road accidents in the city, and the need to prevent serious injuries. The campaign has still left out a few important things. A motorcycle is sometimes the only vehicle a large family can afford, and oftentimes we see a couple riding with children. Considering the near-absence of public transport in Karachi and other parts of Sindh, families have no choice but to travel in such a manner. It is important for the driver and all the passengers to wear helmets. It is because most deaths in accidents occur due to head injuries.

Given the expense this may involve, the government should provide all commuters and their families with helmets. Traders should not exploit the situation by overcharging. The government should keep a watch on this.
