Your child needs you

Letter June 27, 2019
Pressuring your child so you can boast about their accomplishments in your social circle is not right

GUJRANWALA: Getting admitted to good institutions and scoring high marks has become a rat race, and every parent wants their child to be the best. No doubt parents work and sacrifice a lot for their children. Most children try to make their parents proud, and that means more to them than their achievement. But sometimes despite trying their best they are unable to meet their parents’ expectations. In such situations children expect their parents to support them. Unfortunately, some parents do not understand the pressure the child is under and the effect it has on their mental health. Instead of consoling them and letting them know that nothing is above their wellbeing, parents compare them to others and pressure them more. While emphasising on studies, parents should also give them space and the confidence to grow and explore their passions. Pressuring your child so you can boast about their accomplishments in your social circle is not right. Nobody will care if your child is struggling and nobody does more for them than you. Hence, it is important to remember that your child’s wellbeing is more important than passing some test or what your relatives have to say.
