Morsi’s death

Letter June 21, 2019
His supporters are calling for a transparent investigation

ISLAMABAD: The death of former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi in tragic circumstances is lamentable. He was Egypt’s only democratically-elected president. He had been imprisoned for six years while he underwent a trial. Human rights groups and friendly world leaders have spoken up against the alleged mistreatment he received while in prison, which included solitary confinement for almost 23 hours every day, and alleged withholding of medications. He was also reportedly denied food and medicines from his family, which is the norm in Egyptian prisons, as they have limited resources. Media reports show it was a case of political rivalry and how rivalry takes precedence over basic humanity. This reportedly resulted in deterioration of his health. His supporters are calling for a transparent investigation, but it is unlikely we will ever know the real cause of his death.
