Unemployment

Letter May 26, 2019
The issue of unemployment needs a holistic approach

TURBAT: The crime rate is constantly on the rise and no city or village is safe from crime. There are many reasons for this increase, particularly unemployment. Many of these criminals have remained jobless for long periods of time now, and have resorted to crime to survive. While the government needs to reduce crime, it also needs to address the root causes of it. Many countries conduct public punishments and hand out very strict sentences in order to deter people from repeating such crimes. This is a good way of reducing crime, yet we must also address the humanitarian side of the issue. Many criminals have families, and they only get involved in wrong things as it is the only remaining path for survival. Oftentimes, thefts are carried out because the thief has to feed his family. While stringent punishments are definitely needed, and are welcome, the government must also work to eradicate unemployment and make food easily available to everyone. Lack of jobs is the basic cause of the increasing rate of crime. Together with this the rising inflation also needs to be curbed. If the present conditions prevail, the government should also open something like soup kitchens. The issue of unemployment needs a holistic approach.
