It is the government’s responsibility to protect our children and women
KECH, BALOCHISTAN: It is heart-breaking to hear the news of 10-year-old Farishta, who was abducted, possibly raped and murdered in Islamabad. According to the family, the police took four days to register the case, despite the insistence of the parents. The SHO and his subordinates had no compunction in telling the girl’s father “she might have eloped with somebody.” As if the case was not horrifying enough, the unhelpful behaviour of the police makes it even worse.
Unfortunately, this is not the only such case. The number of children and teenagers who are abused, killed and thrown away in secluded places is on the rise.
Such frequent incidents raise a question in my mind: why do we call ourselves Muslims? Are we following the teachings of Islam? The answer is a clear no, as our religion teaches us not to wrong even an insect, let alone an innocent child.
It is the government’s responsibility to protect our children and women and all those who are vulnerable.
