Women’s rights

Letter May 17, 2019
The social structure of our society needs to counteract violence against women

KARACHI: It gives me immense pleasure to say that our religion, Islam, has given equal rights to both women and men. However, it is painful to see that society treats women as inferior to men. The same mindset is deeply seeped into the social institution of family that treats women as responsibilities of their male guardians or husbands.

Women in Pakistan suffer domestic violence, sexual abuse, rape and psychological problems. This violence is often in the form of forced marriages and other sorts of mistreatment.

The social structure of our society needs to counteract violence against women and be conducive to their empowerment and well-being.
