Neglecting some taxpayers

Letter April 12, 2019
Many working class areas are being subjected to prolonged power cuts in the hot weather

KARACHI: There is no water, no electricity, no gas and no public transport. It appears as if the provincial government has disowned Karachi that was once known as the City of Lights.

Dwellers of the city do not get water in their taps but they do get monthly water bills; no proper gas supply but gas bills regularly; inadequate electricity supply; and now they do not have even a skeletal public transport.

The government collects taxes at equal rates from all segments of the people, but many working class areas are being subjected to prolonged power cuts in the hot weather. This is being done on the pretext that residents of these localities pilfer electricity. Is it fair or foul? I leave it to the conscience of those sitting at the helm to decide.
