Tackling poverty

Letter April 11, 2019
The steps taken by the incumbent government to tackle poverty truly deserve appreciation

TURBAT: In recent years, poverty has increased in Pakistan. Every government makes hollow promises to reduce it. Despite poverty eradication being the central objective of all the parties’ manifestoes, little has been done to achieve it. Almost 39 per cent of the rural population is suffering from multi-dimensional poverty, which includes being deprived of two square meals a day, and not having any shelter to live in. Indeed the recent allocation of agricultural funds by the ruling PTI, as a way to combat poverty is a bold and welcome move towards reducing poverty in urban and rural areas.

The government has also emphasised the need for improving water efficiency as we dump water worth $21 billion into the sea annually. The steps taken by the incumbent government to tackle poverty truly deserve appreciation, but whether these schemes will bear fruit in reality, remains to be seen.
