Breast cancer in Pakistan

Letter March 30, 2019
Women tend to overlook information and do not seek timely medical attention

TURBAT: Breast cancer is one of the most dangerous and widespread types of cancer in Pakistan. It is highly prevalent amongst women of all ages, and approximately 77 per cent of those impacted are over the age of 50.

Almost 83,000 women are estimated to be affected by the disease, out of which 40,000 succumb to it annually, according to an estimate by the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital. Factors such as obesity, improper diet and lack of exercise contribute to the onset of the disease.

According to research, breast cancer has a higher rate of curability if it is detected in its early stages, and many hospitals conduct awareness programmes to highlight this crucial aspect.

Despite this, many women tend to overlook the information dispersed in these sessions and do not seek timely medical attention, which oftentimes result in an unsuccessful treatment and increases complications.
