The New Zealand PM’s actions reflected true leadership
TORONTO, CANADA: In the wake of the Christchurch massacre which resulted in more than 50 casualties, and injuries to another 50, we must show our appreciation to the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern. She demonstrated what true leadership looks like as she stood by the Muslim community in support and shared their pain and grief during this tough time.
By showing solidarity with the Muslims, she defied the idea that they are lesser than any other citizens or that any race is above the law. She immediately condemned the attack and termed it an act of terrorism — something that most leaders fail to do when the attacker is a white person. She promised to take immediate action to change the gun laws to prevent such tragedies in the future, and her government banned semi-automatic weapons a week later.
Moreover, PM Ardern showed respect to the Muslim tradition by dressing appropriately and wearing a headscarf in her meetings with the families, and later at the funeral ceremonies. Her actions ensured that the entire country became acquainted with the message of peace that is characteristic to Islam, and is united against all forms of terrorism as she stood by the Muslim community in this hard time.
The New Zealand PM’s actions reflected true leadership which was much needed at a time when only the strongest and the fittest survive by overpowering the weak. She has proved to be an exemplary leader and I wish New Zealand continues to prosper and thrive under her governance.
