Agriculture in Pakistan

Farmers should be better assisted for maximum output

TURBAT: Despite the industrial boom in the past two decades, Pakistan’s economy is still largely dependent on agriculture. The agricultural industry consists of approximately 24% of the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employs 47 per cent of the total labour force and brings in the largest amount of foreign exchange revenue.

Despite these statistics, many farmers still make use of manual labour and basic tools to farm their land. While the government provides many subsidies for farmers, more mechanisation and greater distribution of pedigree seeds is required to ensure the quality of the crops.

The fertility of the soil has also decreased over the years and farmers should be better assisted with this aspect for maximum output.
