Corruption at a glance

Letter March 08, 2019
Political instability has paralysed governance

HYDERABAD: Corruption is a major obstacle to socio-economic stability of a country. According to the Corruption Perceptions Index 2018, Pakistan is the 117th least corrupt nation out of 180, with a total score of 33 out of 100.

The country has shown improvement with one point as compared to the score in 2017. Corruption in Pakistan involves over two billion rupees a day, because of which the country is facing a constant fiscal deficit. It also owes large amounts in debt and liabilities to the World Bank, according to the State Bank of Pakistan.

Therefore, there are many questions arising in the minds of the public with regard to how and who will pay this massive debt.

Governmental failure to act against corruption and take measures to prevent it is regarded as the root cause of corruption. Political instability has paralysed governance.

Moreover, accountability and proper monitoring of institutions has been neglected by relevant organisations. Being a sociologist, I am of the view that our country cannot progress unless corruption is eradicated and there is political stability.

The present government simultaneously needs to closely monitor gaps in policies and implement them as quickly as possible. Anti-corruption laws should be made more stringent and the corrupt elements should be given deterrent punishment.
