A great loss

Letter March 07, 2019
Entire Sindhi community is numb and saddened after Javed Bhutto's murder

KARACHI: There are many bright individuals in the United States who preach and practise peace and tranquillity and call for global coexistence of humans without prejudice towards any race, religion, cast and creed.

One such person was Pakistani-Sindhi intellectual, philosopher and scholar Javed Bhutto hailing from a humble family of Shikarpur in Sindh. He was murdered by Hilman Jordan, his rowdy neighbour.

Javed and Jordan had been involved in a dispute as Javed had reported Jordan to the authorities for drug dealing. As a result, Jordan shot Javed dead outside a convenience store in Southeast, Washington, DC.

Evidently, America is one of the few countries in the world where these criminals have unhindered access to firearms who resort to shed blood of fellow humans without any mercy. The entire Sindhi community is numb and saddened after Javed’s murder.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident as the great signer John Lennon was murdered in similar circumstances. America also has the highest rate of mass shootings in the world due to accessibility of firearms. The country’s soft policy on the buying and selling of guns is baffling, as a total ban on gun use is the need of the hour.

Meanwhile, the Sindhi community will continue to mourn the loss of a great mind, an intellectual and a dear friend who had also wisely headed the Philosophy Department at Sindh University.
