Students’ predicament

Letter February 28, 2019
Due to the above-mentioned, law students all over the country are at a loss

TURBAT: In a bid to reform law education, the Supreme Court of Pakistan passed an order that in order for students to enroll in LLB programmes, they must pass the Law Admission Test (LAT) conducted by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.

On the order of the SC, the HEC had conducted the first LAT on August 19, 2018, but thousands of students could not appear in the test, as the dates of the test and the SC order mandating it were very close. The second test was scheduled for February 10, 2019, but unfortunately it has been postponed by the HEC. Furthermore, in order for students to gain admission, they need to pass the test, irrespective of the circumstances. Students who were previously enrolled in a three-year programme also have to pass this test in order to continue their studies as the programme is no longer recognised and the five-year LLB has now come into effect.

Due to the above-mentioned, law students all over the country are at a loss, as classes have been stopped, and their education has been interrupted. In such a situation, the students’ time is being wasted as the HEC has not announced a date for the test as yet. The students are awaiting a date for LAT so they may proceed with their admissions. We demand urgent action to solve the issue.
