Food fatalities

Letter February 25, 2019
It is worrisome to realise that food being sold in restaurants is not fit for consumption

KARACHI: Five children of a single family and their aunt have died of food poisoning recently in Karachi. It is unfortunate that this incident comes only a few months after two minor boys died after consuming food at a famous eatery.

While investigations are underway to determine which restaurant is accountable for the deaths of the young children, it is worrisome to realise that food being sold in restaurants in the country is not fit for consumption.

People in Pakistan consider eating at restaurants as a leisure activity because` they have few recreational activities. However, this very leisure activity is proving to be fatal and no one is being held accountable for it.

Where is the food regulatory authority and why does it only spring to action after a death is reported? Shouldn’t the department concerned conduct tests on a regular basis to ensure that no person dies because of eating their favourite food?

The death of eight persons should be enough to launch a countrywide check on the food being served in different restaurants. Both federal and provincial governments should work together in this regard.
