The government should hold an independent investigation into the Abbottabad raid and the PNS Mehran attack.
ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Gibran Peshimam’s article of June 17 titled “Pulling punches”. The writer is correct in saying that Ejaz Haider’s article was spot on. What is stopping the elected PPP government from taking charge of the situation, from sending home those responsible for the mess that the country finds itself in? The government should hold an independent investigation into the Abbottabad raid and the PNS Mehran attack.
It seems that the government is playing a very dangerous game because it is not taking the important decisions it needs to take, especially on foreign policy and security. Furthermore, the government seems to be doing nothing about the Americans and the CIA agents who seem to be roaming freely inside the country, and this also angers the army. This is a bad omen and needs to be checked because the army, despite its many faults, is necessary for Pakistan. And contrary to what many people believe, not everybody in India today is like Gandhi and, given the chance, would like harm to come to Pakistan.
The PPP government needs to tell the Americans that they want to be no part of the war on terror and its operation inside Afghanistan because clearly that is having a fallout inside Pakistan as well. Of course, this also means that Pakistan needs to fight the extremist and militant groups on its own, using, as and when needed, counterintelligence, negotiations, limited military action and so on.
