The campaign looks to eliminate sexist jokes, dialogues and language on all entertainment forums in the country
KARACHI: This year on February 12, when Pakistan Women’s Day was observed, a non-government organisation, Uks, launched a campaign titled #NotFunny. The campaign looks to eliminate sexist jokes, dialogues and language on all entertainment forums in the country.
According to Uks, “through this campaign, it is paying tribute to each and every woman who has stood up against gender inequality and/or fights for her or other women’s rights.”
This is a great initiative as more often than not we have seen our television anchors, celebrities and dramas serials laughing and entertaining at the expense of women — a segment that is already marginalised in the country.
If our mainstream media gives in to the misogynistic setup of our patriarchal society, it will only reinforce it. To break-free from it, we need to call it out and make sure that we are teaching our future generations the right thing, as what they see is what they learn.
