Political parties need to realise that amendment to Constitution cannot be ignored and dismissed
SHIKARPUR: Lately a debate has been going on the 18th constitutional amendment on social, print and electronic media. The debate perhaps depicts the weakening of central powers. Since the PTI came into power, the debate has only accelerated.
The sensitive issue has given rise to many controversial questions among different political parties. The PPP fears that the incumbent government is trying to to do away with federalism, trying to impose the presidential system.
Political parties in Pakistan need to realise that an amendment to the Constitution cannot be completely ignored and dismissed, especially one which was ratified through consensus by all political parties of the country.
Also, the presidential system is possible and beneficial in countries where people are not diverse. But, Pakistan is a diverse state where the presidential system would create many problems in provinces. Moreover, a supreme leader under the presidential system can never provide a suitable environment for political and economic development of a country.
Therefore, the main purpose of the 18th amendment and the National Finance Commission Award, which provides all provinces equal rights to resources of the country, should be considered as the most important part to implement. It would create peace, prosperity and development in the country.
