Yemen’s dying children

Letter January 31, 2019
According to the UN, one child is likely to die every 10 minutes in Yemen

LAHORE: The war in Yemen has almost been forgotten amid stories relating to international politics that fills all the space on our newspapers and all the airtime on our television channels. But the war-torn Arab country is witnessing its children dying in large numbers. Benazir Jatoi’s column titled ‘2019 must belong to the children of Yemen’ published in this paper on January 30 has shed the much-needed light on the Yemen war.

In her article, Ms Benazir has tried to bring the world’s focus on the dying children of Yemen by describing their frail state and stating the number of deaths that have taken place as the war continues.

“According to the UN, one child is likely to die every 10 minutes in Yemen. The UN estimates that 400,000 children are starving, another 1.5 million are already malnourished and a further five million children are on the brink of famine,” writes the author. These are significant numbers and the world ought to pay attention to it and do the needful.
