Charities and exploitation

Letter January 28, 2019
Cases of abuse and exploitation in charities are manifold not just in Liberia but in Pakistan as well

KARACHI: This is in response to Dr Shenila Khoja-Moolji’s article titled ‘Foreign charities and sexual exploitation’ published on January 24 in this paper. Dr Shenila has managed to highlight the dark side of charities in the world, which is full of exploitation of the vulnerable people who go to charities with the hope of escaping the struggles of their lives, but are only pushed towards the brink of survival.

Cases of abuse and exploitation in charities are manifold not just in Liberia, as mentioned by Dr Shenila, but in Pakistan as well. It’s about time attention was given to this concerning issue and as mentioned by the writer, “Let us nurture a culture where sexual harassment by anyone — foreign or otherwise — is made unequivocally unacceptable.”
