Making sense of suo motu

Letter June 15, 2011
In a country where problems are aplenty, surely possessing a bottle of alcohol should not be such a big deal.

NIDERRAU, GERMANY: This is with reference to Saroop Ijaz’s piece of June 14 titled “Making sense of suo motu”. It has been reported in recent days that the chief justice of Pakistan has used his powers to ascertain the details of a recent incident involving a well-known television actress who was intercepted at Islamabad airport with two bottles of liqour. While no one is denying that under Pakistani law this may be a crime, the question is that is the possession of two bottles of alcohol such a big crime that the country’s seniormost judicial officer should become involved?

In a country where problems are aplenty, surely possessing a bottle of alcohol should not be such a big deal in any case. And to think that every day the country has suicide bombings and/or target killings.
