KARACHI: This refers to the joint press conference of young doctors of Sindh on January 20, 2019 at Karachi Press Club during which they put forward their legitimate demands before the Sindh health department. Key postulates of the demands were equal remuneration and allowances for Sindh government doctors just like their counterparts in other provinces who are getting twice as much for their services. They called for a structured promotion criteria for government doctors, postings with respect to their domicile, preventive measures against corruption in the aforesaid department, hard area allowances and health professional allowance.
The Sindh health department should look into this grave issue as this injustice has led to depression and a sense of alienation among the young doctors of the province. Moreover, this will not only help in discouraging unnecessary private practice and brain drain, but will also discourage corrupt practices among government doctors.
In the press conference, the president and the secretary of the Young Doctors Association (YDA) Sindh have called for a protest in the days to come by shutting off all (non-emergency) OPDS throughout Sindh in case the health department goes ahead with its discriminatory attitude with its doctors. This will affect the patients coming for treatments. Keeping the welfare of its people in mind, the provincial government should direct its health department to settle the issue on a priority basis.
