We can only lament the state of education in our society
KARACHI: Lately I am seeing newspaper reports that students of primary and high schools find Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb boring and their teachers demanding their replacement with simpler things.
A teacher has mentioned The Merchant of Venice tale as boring quoting his students. Shakespeare has given many expressions that have become part of the English language.
Do we want our children to drop those beautiful expressions? The same teacher said his students ask the meanings of James and Charles, so in English lessons these should be replaced by local names. He has also found vocal supporters.
All this sounds ridiculous. We can only lament the state of education in our society.
