Economic empowerment of women

Letter January 17, 2019
Why is there no campaign to reduce the burden of the groom’s family?

GUJRAT: If one analyses the trending #jahezkhoribandkro campaign, we find that it focuses only on the burden of dowry on the bride’s family. Undoubtedly, our society needs it but why is there no campaign to reduce the burden of the groom’s family? Why should a male always worry about having status, education, money, house, ideal family and private transport to be a groom?

Parents save money to arrange for handsome dowry for their daughters and to send their sons to school so that they would share their economic burden. Instead, these savings can be spent on daughters’ education. This will economically empower girls.
